It started when I took on the role of manager when my manager was on maternity leave. During this time I got pregnant. My manager chose not to return to the firm after her maternity leave and they were looking to recruit. Although I had been exemplary performance feedback and achieved the highest appraisal score possible during my time in the management role, I was told outright that they couldn't promote me while I was pregnant because I "might not come back."
After this, they recruited externally and I had to induct that person into the role and train them in the systems and processes for the team. The person they recruited ended up resigning early on into my maternity leave. The firm began speaking to me about running the team on my return but within a senior executive role rather than as manager (with therefore a lower salary than at management level).
I resigned and chose not to return, and set up my own company in an unrelated field. I wish I had sought advice but pregnancy is can be stressful and daunting in itself and I didn't want to add to that at the time.
Push for significant pay increase when acting up into a more senior role and hold your ground about your own value. I was only given a £1000 increase for the year I took on my manager's role. I don't think I could have changed the outcome of the promotion as minds were made up, but at least financially I'd have been better off.
